National News Update on Common Core Initiative   9 comments

How quickly Common Core has gone from being almost a secret, a truly under-the-news-radar movement, to being a sharp bone of contention and a scorchingly hot topic across the nation as right and left, legislators, parents, teachers and yes,  students— join to fight the erosion of local control of education, and the erosion of high quality education.

Here’s just a smattering of the pushback happening across this nation.  Please feel free to leave additional related Common Core pushback news links in the comments section!

  1. More action in Worcester, Massachusetts: US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is engaging in an invitation only “town hall” style meeting at Worcester Technical High School, and groups of protestors are planning to picket him on the corner of Belmont Street and Skyline Drive outside of the school, starting at 8:30 a.m. Duncan is scheduled to be at the school between 9-11 a.m. The media is already covering this story. Learn more about the planned protest here:

  5. S.300 passed out of the SC Senate Education Committee in South Carolina is on to the floor for debate. It has amendments attached that pretty much gutted getting us out of Common Core…but we are hopeful it will get reverted back to clean bill. Basically, the amendments leave it in place for 4 more years with a provision to reveiw it next year…and it would get us out of Smarter Balance as well as prohibit any personally identifiable data being shared without parental consent. SC Parents Involved in Education have been leading the fight in SC…pray it gets reverted back to clean bill… or you can follow us on Stop Common Core in South Carolina on face book.

  7. Big Common Core news in Arizona is not being covered. Diane Douglas has won the Republican nomination for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction on an anti-common core platform. Please publicize this important news.
